The article on Lifehacker, the article in the Harvard Business review and my post make abundantly clear that they are referring to productive work, not to drudgery. I had thought that the picture I presented of leisure was clear enough. Also, it was apparently not for some.

I was talking about those who have attacked the work ethic and who tend to demean work and to glorify leisure. Obviously, you cannot work all of the time, but when a culture places more value on leisure than on work, when it considers lying around a swimming pool to be the meaning of live, when it tells people that they should live for vacation it is inducing bad behavior.

Stuart Schneidermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12784043736879991769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078379512095504946.post-36938960792615390812013-02-18T07:06:51.797-08:002013-02-18T07:06:51.797-08:00You need to read Leisure the Basis of Culture by J...You need to read Leisure the Basis of Culture by Josef Pieper.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078379512095504946.post-50835261947800435132013-02-18T07:05:50.614-08:002013-02-18T07:05:50.614-08:00you need to read "Leisure the Basis of Cultur...you need to read "Leisure the Basis of Culture" by Joseph Pieper. He was a German philosopher of the last century, and he explains why authentic leisure is necessary for true human flourishing, and moreover is the purpose of work itself.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078379512095504946.post-19645238539872410792013-02-18T06:10:17.483-08:002013-02-18T06:10:17.483-08:00You're making a false dichotomy. Work can be fulfilling or drudgery; leisure can be vegetative but it can also be life enhancing, if used to get more in touch with other people, the world, the realm of ideas, and spirituality. And our culture has never had less leisure than it does today. We should re-balance.

I wouldn't care to have you as a "life coach."Rick Darbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02371910140619422820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8078379512095504946.post-79015340271765850162013-02-17T11:09:48.818-08:002013-02-17T11:09:48.818-08:00Playing doesn't bother me because play is acti...Playing doesn't bother me because play is active. Modern entertainment (music players, television, etc.) is quite passive. It used to be that you sought out leisure. I remember an account buy a guy observing one who thought the worker was on auto-pilot, so he put himself in the man's way. Man walked into him, then around. Same the 2nd time. Third time, the man came to, asked what the hell he was doing?Sam L.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00996809377798862214noreply@blogger.com
