A Great Awakening?

It feels like a great awakening. Maybe.

America’s millennial generation— the under 30 set— has just been roused from its torpor too discover that it has been had. When Obama talked about taxing the rich, soaking the 1%, he didn’t really mean it. Any more than he meant it when he said that under his health care plan everyone would be able to choose his plan and his doctors and his hospital freely.

It turns out that Obamacare is a scheme to provide more people with substandard health care— i.e. Medicaid-- by taxing the young and the healthy. True enough, Obamacare also provides coverage to those who had pre-existing conditions, but surely that could have been accomplished without blowing up the health insurance marketplace.

Now, if millennials want health insurance they will be forced to buy a plan that offers far more than they want or need. All in the presumed interest of helping the less fortunate.

They were all for self-sacrifice, until they discovered that they were the ones being sacrificed.

Ron Fournier reports on the latest poll numbers:

Indeed, millennials are not so hot on their president.

Obama's approval rating among young Americans is just 41 percent, down 11 points from a year ago, and now tracking with all adults. While 55 percent said they voted for Obama in 2012, only 46 percent said they would do so again.

When asked if they would want to recall various elected officials, 45 percent of millennials said they would oust their member of Congress; 52 percent replied "all members of Congress" should go; and 47 percent said they would recall Obama. The recall-Obama figure was even higher among the youngest millennials, ages 18 to 24, at 52 percent.

While there is no provision for a public recall of U.S. presidents, the poll question revealed just how far Obama has fallen in the eyes of young Americans.

IOP director Trey Grayson called the results a "sea change" attributable to the generation's outsized and unmet expectations for Obama, as well as their concerns about the economy, Obamacare and government surveillance.

The survey of 2,089 young adults, conducted Oct. 30 through Nov. 11, spells trouble for the Affordable Care Act. The fragile economics underpinning the law hinge on the willingness of healthy, young Americans to forgo penalties and buy health insurance.

According to the poll, 57 percent of millennials disapprove of Obamacare, with 40 percent saying it will worsen their quality of care and a majority believing it will drive up costs. Only 18 percent say Obamacare will improve their care. Among 18-to-29-year-olds currently without health insurance, less than one-third say they're likely to enroll in the Obamacare exchanges.

A large number wants to recall President Obama. Hopefully, an even larger number will start questioning the educational system that allowed them to believe that American presidents can be recalled.

So, dear friends, millennial voters have discovered that they have been played like suckers. When they thought that they were receiving an education, they were being softened up; they had no defense against the siren song of demagogues who only want their votes. They voted for hope and change and they got despair and regression. They see the Obamafied future and they don’t see anything good coming to them.

As the old saying goes, you get what you vote for.

No one knows how this will play itself out. No one knows whether the Republican Party will be sufficiently adroit to attract these disaffected voters. One is not holding one’s breath on that one.

True dat. There is no hope for the Stupid Party.

Also, I'm not persuaded by Millennial Remorse. A lot of Obama defectors will be jumping ship because he didn't outlaw cars, confiscate all firearms, replace all fossil fuels with wind and solar, make college totally free, or give them government pseudo-jobs-for-life.

  2. The reaction from most of the Disappointed Millenials seems to be "a plague on all their houses"...ie, all politician suck, and The System is beyond repair.

This is actually very dangerous...think Weimar Republic.

  3. From a Tuesday NPR article:

"When voters are confronted with inconvenient facts, it is often times difficult to persuade them that those facts are, in fact, facts," said George Washington political scientist John Sides. "When supporters of President Obama see negative information about Obama, they don't think it is true. To the extent it is true, they find ways to explain it or rationalize it — they discount it."

With Obama's approval rating still dropping, according to Business Insider, perhaps Obama's supporters are getting tired of trying to "rationalize" away the negative aspects of Obama's policies.

  5. If you honestly think that these Millenials will suddenly turn conservative, then you're crazy. They still believe in all the liberal garbage. Obama wasn't the one to give them the goods, so they'll latch onto the next liberal nutcase that comes their way.

  6. The Millenials will move on to another vacuous, charismatic, false idol who will help them feel better about themselves and promise the.moon. Count on it.
