Pity poor Angela Merkel. The German Chancellor,
once considered the most powerful woman in the world and the leader of the free
world has been reduced to whining about her own failed policies. As she clings bitterly to power, she cannot accept that she is the problem, not the solution.
The Obamaphile Chancellor, having bought the cosmopolitan
notion of free movement of immigrants across borders has
suddenly awakened from her stupor and discovered that the new Muslim arrivals
have not just brought misogyny with them: they have brought back German anti-Semitism.
The story, from Agence France Presse, lumps the refugee
population together with the far right, but still the problem lies with the
refugees. Merkel has no idea of what to do about it. And she refuses to accept
that her own policies caused the problem:
German
leaders are increasingly alarmed about a resurgence of anti-Semitism 73 years
after the Holocaust, stemming from an emboldened far right and an influx of
refugees from countries hostile to Israel.
Germany
is marking the 1945 liberation of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz with solemn
ceremonies, but also warning of the need for stronger vigilance.
On the
anniversary on Saturday, Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned revisionist forces
seeking to call into question the country’s commitment to atoning for its Nazi
past. She said fighting anti-Semitism and racism must be a “daily task.”
“It is
inconceivable and shameful that no Jewish institution can exist without police
protection, whether it is a school, a kindergarten or a synagogue,” she said.
True, some far right groups have started to embrace anti-Semitism.
More importantly, Germany’s Turkish community has happily followed the lead of
Turkish president Erdogan… who has trafficked in anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Shamefully, Merkel has been unable to accept
responsibility for the horrors her own policies have wrought. If she had any
sense of shame she would resign and allow someone else to clean up her
mess.
I suspect it's more the Muslims, and the "far right" (whatever that means) are perhaps using the Muslims as cover. I know nothing about the German "far right".
