David Foster has linked a prior post, about marrying the right or the wrong person on the Chicago Boyz blog. He raises the question of whether arranged marriage. It has provoked some interesting comments, so I link the post, for your attention.

I do not doubt that there have been arranged marriages, but I know of none other than those of impoverished titled men and wealthy American daughters.

Thanks for the report from India. It allows us to have a fair and reasoned judgment of arranged or semi-arranged marriages... without allowing our bias to define our opinions.
ReplyDeleteTwo of two of my coworkers from India (male engineers) had arranged marriages in their late 20s, with both husbands and wives schooling and living here in different cities here, arranged through their families back home, and only met each other once before agreeing. They all had veto rights of course. Both coworkers said they didn't dated at all when they came for college here, undergrad nor grad school. If it works, it seems very expedient, especially for busy professionals, but I don't envy their flight times home.
ReplyDeleteI think I know who my parents would have chosen for me.
ReplyDeleteWell meaning, but no thanks.
