New York's Crime-Ridden Public Schools

In Richard Carranza  New York's Mayor, aka Comrade Bill de Blasio, found someone who was dumber than he was. It took time and effort, but eventually Comrade Bill found his man. 

In Carranza he found a School Chancellor who was focused like a laser beam on bringing diversity to the New York public school system. And who did not much care whether anyone learned anything. After all, a well-educated student would quickly ascertain that Carranza was an imbecile. And, we can’t have that.

Anyway, we are confident that the academic achievement of New York public school students is as bad as it has always been. But now, we know that, in one category, New York schools are leading the pack. Compared to other schools in New York State city schools are way out in front when it comes to crime, violence and disruption. Another great achievement for Comrade Bill and his flunking school chancellor.

The New York Post reports:

New York City schools had the most “violent and disruptive incidents” in the state last year — accounting for more than half, with incidents including assaults, sexual offenses and bomb threats, a new report reveals.

The data released Tuesday by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli shows 17,991 incidents out of 32,084 statewide came from Big Apple public and charter schools — or 56 percent of the state’s total.

That’s out of 1,817 city schools, which serve 1.1 million pupils — 40 percent of the state’s 2.7 million students.

Fortunately, the city has stringent gun control laws. So, children happily bring knives to school. Why not? You do not think that any learning goes on in those places:

The shocking data comes a day after The Post revealed more than 1,600 knives were confiscated in city schools last year, the highest figure in at least five years and up drastically from the 873 blades seized in 2015.

DiNapoli’s study shows New York City schools logged the highest overall incident rates last year — coming in at 16.9 incidents per 1,000 pupils, followed by the Capital District showing 12 occurrences per 1,000 kids.

Of course, the term “disturbances” is imprecise. It might be suggesting that children speak out of turn, push each other in the corridor, pull hair … or perform some other form of juvenile mischief. 

Well, think again: we are really talking about crime:

Schools break down disturbances into categories including homicides, assaults, weapons possessions, sexual offenses and bomb threats.

The city led the state in sexual offenses — recording 3.3 per 1,000 students. That’s three times higher than the second-highest region, the Mohawk Valley, with 1.1 per 1,000.

The city also had a high assault rate, at 8.3 assaults per 1,000 students....

However, the five boroughs did have the lowest alcohol and drug-related incidents in the state, cataloging 1.9 reports per 1,000 pupils.

How does this compare to other schools across the state?

One-fourth of all public and charter schools, about 1,210 institutions, across the state claimed they experienced not one single incident.

But only 8.3 percent of city schools reported zero incidents — compared to 47.2 percent from Long Island.

One suspects that the school system rigidly enforces Obama administration policy, to the effect that disruptive students must be kept in school. They cannot be expelled or even suspended… because that would help the other students to learn something. And, we can’t have that.
