Killing Austin, Texas

If you are thinking of moving to Austin, don’t.

So says Bryan Preston in his Pajamas Media column. As you surely know, Austin is a leftist redoubt deep in the heart of red Texas. As I assume you also know, Austin politicians are committed leftists, radical to the core. Led by Mayor Steve Adler, they are hellbent on destroying a great American city. They have seen how leftist policies have turned the great cities of the American West Coast into open-air toilets, and they want to try the same policies at home.

Under normal circumstances, and when people have functioning rational faculties, they draw lessons from success and failure. If you think empirically you allow experience to guide your mental peregrinations. And yet, when we arrive at the radical left-- which is often called progressive, but isn’t-- we find people who reject the lessons of history and who double down on failure.

If it didn’t work anywhere else, the numbskulls who are running Austin believe that it can work there. They have made it, in Preston’s words, a laboratory for failed policies:

The point is to bash addle-brained people like Steve Adler, Greg Casar and others who ought to be adult enough to know better, but who have turned Austin into their socialist laboratory. Thanks to them Austin has become a basket-case so quickly it's making the city's heads spin. Austin now funds abortion with the taxpayer dollars it takes from business and property owners it is ignoring, across the board, with its clownish emphasis on bicycle lanes and homeless campouts. Austin's priorities ought to disgust all reasonable people.

He continues:

Under their lack of leadership and vision, Austin is becoming undriveable, unlivable, and unsafe. The city's elected leaders aren't failing to learn, they're succeeding at learning how to destroy a city. And the voters, while they are rightfully complaining and signing the petition to rescind the insane camping policy, are likely to not only re-elect the same people again - they're probably going to vote for even worse policies and politicians next year, and the year after that, and the year after that.

The moral of the story is: Don’t move to Austin.

  1. I live and work in Austin. Every word you've written is true, especially the part about how the voters will re-elect our City Council and elect even more "leadership" just like them. The cognitive dissonance is truly breathtaking. My wife and I are making retirement plans, and they don't involve Austin.

  2. Clearly, the STUPID is STRONG in Austin.

Does the Governor have the authority and power to replace Austin's mayor (and city council, if there is one)?

  3. Even Kinky Friedman is sick of what Austin’s become: a no-fun, PC gulag. Austin hasn’t been weird in years, it’s conformist and ideologically monolithic. And it’s expensive.
