The disjunction is jarring. On the one side we learn that the Australian Psychological Society has gone all-in for mutilating children. That is, for allowing children under the age of 16 to undergo gender reassignment surgery without parental permission.
Your children are not yours. They belong to the state and to experts. One is dismayed to see that the APS has caved to the transgender lobby… spinelessly.
Anyway, the Daily Mail reports the story:
Transgender children under the age of 16 should be able to undergo surgery without their parents' permission, according to Australia's top psychologists.
The Australian Psychological Society, which represents 24,000 professionals, says the disapproval of both parents should not inhibit a child under 16 from consenting to procedures.
But childrens' ability to make decisions must be assessed by 'competent' doctors, the APS said in an unpublished law reform submission, reported by The Australian.
It was only last year transgender children needed to seek the approval of the Family Court to have irreversible surgery.
The APS' stance comes from questions floated by the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute.
They are in the process of reviewing legislation which allows teenagers over 16 to change their gender identity on their birth certificate.
According to the peak psychologist body, mandatory pre-surgery counselling is often 'an unnecessary burden' on the child.
The APS said the child's gender identity had likely already experienced 'considerable medical oversight'.
Parents who disapprove of their children's medical treatment pose a 'significant barrier' for the child, it said.
Now, we read in Sky News, from Great Britain, of a growing movement among those who have transitioned… to transition back to their original gender. In particular this involves girls who allowed themselves to be mutilated because they believed themselves to be boys.
Hundreds of young transgender people are seeking help to return to their original sex, Sky News has learnt.
According to a charity being set up to help them, members of the trans community are detransitioning - and the numbers may increase further.
The number of young people seeking gender transition is at an all-time high but we hear very little, if anything, about those who may come to regret their decision.
Charlie Evans, 28, identified as male for nearly 10 years.
Last year she detransitioned and went public with her story and was stunned by the number of people she discovered in a similar position.
"I'm in communication with 19 and 20-year-olds who have had full gender reassignment surgery who wish they hadn't and their dysphoria hasn't been relieved, they don't feel better for it," says Charlie.
Charlie says she's been contacted by "hundreds" of people seeking help - 30 people alone in her area of Newcastle.
"I think some of the common characteristics are that they tend to be around their mid-20s, they're mostly female and mostly same-sex attracted, and often autistic as well."
She recalls being approached by a young girl with a beard who hugged her after giving a public talk, who explained she was a destransitioned woman too.
"She said she felt shunned by the LGBT community for being a traitor. So I felt I had to do something."
Charlie is now launching a charity called The Detransition Advocacy Network with their first meeting in Manchester at the end of the month.
I hope the parents are not required to pay for their child's surgery. I was going to say "trust the parents are not required", but I can't trust what to happen.
ReplyDeleteIn England? Charlie will soon be in gaol for hate speech.
ReplyDeleteI would not date one in any event.
ReplyDeleteYou will faithfully obey.
ReplyDeleteHave you actually read the APS position paper, and their response to the Australian's reporting? Suggest you do before making such uninformed and inflammatory remarks.
ReplyDeleteI did read the APS response... which says that when parents disapprove of a child's wish to be surgically altered, the child can have recourse to the opinion of medical professionals. This means that the opinion of professionals who think that being transgendered is an anomaly needing surgical correction can supersede the opinions of parents. There is no dispute here-- so-called and brainwashed experts can allow a child to be surgically mutilated.
ReplyDeleteSex (i.e. genotype): male, female. Gender (e.g. phenotype, physical and/or mental attributes): masculine, feminine. Transgender spectrum: significant divergence from sex correlated gender (e.g. sexual orientation), includes existing and transitive states. Normalize (e.g. transgender conversion therapy, including socialization of the population, medical corruption targeting adolescent and prepubescent children), tolerate, or reject.
