The Revenge of the Carnivores

Speaking of unmitigated horrors... This one happened in London. It gives us some hope for the future of Once-Great Britain. No, I am not speaking about the ascent of Boris Johnson, but of an incident that occurred at a vegan food stall in London’s Soho neighborhood.

The Guardian has the savory, or unsavory, if you prefer, details. Apparently, two inveterate carnivores defiled the sanctity of the vegan proceedings by eating… you will never guess… dead squirrels. And eating them raw. The indignity was drooling out of their mouths… when they were arrested and charged for a crime against vegetables.

Two pro-meat protesters have been fined after eating raw squirrels at a food market.

Deonisy Khlebnikov, 22, and Gatis Lagzdins, 29, ate the still fur-covered dead animals in front of members of the public, including young children, outside a vegan stall in Soho, the West End of London.

The pair were asked to stop by onlookers, including the parent of an upset child, but continued their protest at the Soho vegan food market in Rupert Street on 30 March, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

They were found guilty of a public order offence at City of London magistrates court on Monday.

Natalie Clines, a senior CPS prosecutor, said: “Deonisy Khlebnikov and Gatis Lagzdins claimed they were against veganism and were raising awareness about the dangers of not eating meat when they publicly consumed raw squirrels.

“But by choosing to do this outside a vegan food stall and continuing with their disgusting and unnecessary behaviour despite requests to stop, including from a parent whose child was upset by their actions, the prosecution was able to demonstrate that they had planned and intended to cause distress to the public.

“Their premeditated actions caused significant distress to members of the public, including young children.”

Think of it. The disgusting behavior of these two men caused significant emotional distress to vegans… and even to children. They were all triggered. Of course, we all know that trigger warnings are ineffective at protecting anyone from trauma-inducing stimuli. They make people more sensitive to them.

But, we salute the two gentlemen for their exercise of their right to free expression. Of course, the courts do not seem it that way, but, what can you do. Frankly, I would have been even more sympathetic to their protest if they had chosen a good T-bone. Squirrels are rodents. Yuck. And, please, next time at least have the good sense to barbecue them.

  1. The existence of fake "burgers", "chicken" nuggets, etc. confirms, in my opinion, the miasma of bankrupt moral preening emanating from the political vegan tribe.

I'm amused, however, by the recent controversy about Impossible Foods' soy "burger". To emulate blood in a rare beef burger, Impossible Foods uses soy protein. "What's the big deal?", one may ask. "No animals were harmed!!! No cow farts were emitted!!!"

    Only this:
"Their controversial “blood” source is soy leghemoglobin, the red-colored protein found in the nodules attached to the roots of soybeans[...] Leghemoglobin in a burger is contentious for a couple of reasons. Leghemoglobin has never been consumed by humans before, and Impossible Foods did very little safety testing before including it in their burger. The FDA advised Impossible Foods that they have not proven the safety of leghemoglobin, but the FDA has not prohibited the company from marketing their burger[...] The other reason it is controversial is that the Impossible Foods’ leghemoglobin is not produced by soybeans. It is produced in fermenters by yeast that have been genetically modified. Soybean genes were inserted into the yeast that allow the yeast to produce leghemoglobin, which is then extracted, concentrated, and included in the burger recipe..."

The package (recyclable, I'm sure...) should read "Product contains untested GMO offal."

  2. Eating squirrels whole, not skinning them, makes me wonder about whether there were fleas on them, and without cooking them, any diseases in them.

  3. Don't complain that these two guys triggered your children. Complain that you've raised your children to be scared of their own shadows. It's a big, bad world out there for trembling little snowflakes.
