The Dalton School Is in Trouble

Yesterday I posted a dozen or so proposals from the faculty of the Dalton School. The faculty members who signed the letter containing them were promoting anti-racism training in the school. As it happens, if their suggested items had been enacted it would have destroyed the school.

Scott Johnson, of the Naked Dollar blog-- the first place to draw attention to the madness, explained-- links here and here:

The demands for additional staffers alone would add millions of dollars to Dalton's annual budget. Siphoning off 50% of donations would dry up funding. Eliminating AP classes (referred to as 'leveled courses') would destroy college admissions.

Now, the Dalton School counts among the toniest in New York City. Among the other topline schools is the Collegiate School. Many New York parents would willingly sell their souls to get their children admitted to either of these places.

A few months back Megyn Kelly pulled her children from the Collegiate School because, for paying over $50K a year, the school was teaching that white school districts were spawning “future killer cops.”

Beyond being an instance of complete insanity and stupidity-- indulged by New York’s smart set, people who are apparently nowhere near as smart as they think they are-- the story matters for another reason.

Recall that in my discussions of the exodus out of New York, I reported that some major financial institutions were hesitating to move more operations to Florida and Texas because they did not believe that schools in those places were up to New York standards.

But now, when Dalton and Collegiate are indoctrinating children in critical race theory, what reason would any parent have to stay in New York?

Considering the appalling state of New York public schools, lately made even worse by an idiot Chancellor named Richard Carranza, why would anyone stay around. As for the latest move by Carranza, he is eliminating merit based admissions to middle schools. Apparently, he wants to promote more diversity. This will naturally dumb down those places and cause parents to move out of the city.

So, parents who were staying in the city to ensure the best education for their children are now being hung out to dry.

The New York Post reports on some of the reaction:

But some parents say the backlash has become oppressive.

“My ancestors experienced white supremacy by being slaughtered,” a Jewish parent told The Post. “The idea that being white automatically means you are privileged or a white supremacist is ridiculous. My child comes from people who had to fight for everything they got.

“It’s just about skin color now.”

And, of course, many of the parents refuse to speak out. They want their children to go to Yale and they fear that if they break with the school, it will diminish their children’s chances. Of course, if the school fails to teach anything, their children will surely come up short on standardized tests. And they will be ill prepared for college and for life.

Those who disagree remain silent, the insider said. “Parents are terrified to speak up for fear of retribution. Parents are acting like spineless wimps.”

The next time you feel proud to live in a country that respects different opinions, think again. This feels a lot more like a despotism,

Of course, some parents are definitely going to remove their children from the Dalton indoctrination mill.

One Dalton father, who said he’s removed his children from the school as a result of the manifesto, said Dalton “has totally failed in its mission to uplift the very people it professes to help.

“It’s completely absurd and a total step backwards,” the father, who did not want to be identified, told the Post.

“This supposed anti-racist agenda is asking everyone to look at black kids and treat them differently because of the color of their skin,” he said. “The school is more focused on virtue-signaling this nonsense than it is in actually helping students of color. More parents are going to be pulling their kids out.”

To be fair, the school has not embraced all of the proposals. You can read the entire faculty statement at this Daily Mail link. It has declared them to be “thought starters.” It says that it does not support all of the language in the manifesto.

And yet, all members of the faculty signed the statement. Would any serious parent want to send a child to be educated by people whose minds were completely infested by today’s trendy anti-racism and anti-white and anti-American ideology?

  1. I would suspect that Harvard and Yale would be doing much as the Dalton School is...dumbing-down and raising tuition. I could be wrong, of course, since I have never been near any of those.

  2. "“has totally failed in its mission to uplift the very people it professes to help"...this applies to many 'liberal' and 'progressive' programs.

In an old SF story by Poul Anderson, a man develops a deep love for a race of dinosaur-like creatures living on Venus. He undertakes great efforts to provide a better environment for these animals, involving terraforming IIRC. It all goes wrong, and the species is extinguished.

The last paragraph of the story of chilling:

"God, please exist. Please make a Hell for me."

  3. "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

  5. Parents want their kids to attend elite colleges, but these crazy pc ideas were spawned there.
