Jon Stewart Mocks John Kerry
I understand that there are still a few stragglers who have failed to see how pathetic Secretary of State John Kerry's diplomatic performance in Paris was last week.

I will not listen to him. I was given his book; gave it away after looking thru it.
The YouTube clip was removed, but I found another:

My best guess on why I'd rather be supportive than mocking is that I don't want to be mocked.
It does seem that some people grow up in families where teasing and mocking are signs of affection. Maybe Jon Stewart was such a person.
Even the pastor at my local church has started a tradition of a "Roast" when interns leave.
It does look like a delicate balance for speakers. Like what do you do if your victim starts crying in the middle of your monologue?
I do remember some of the speakers offering apologies like "X told this story about himself." so everyone would know they're not really being mean.

In addition to jokes and insults, such events may also involve genuine praise and tributes. The implication is that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult, and it is seen by some as a great honor to be roasted.

Whatever else is clear, most people probably would never want to be "Roasted", while anyone who is aspiring towards a leadership position in anything (perhaps even parent!) ought to be willing to experience mockery by people who care and know your triggers, so you can better handle it when they are mocked by people who only want your failure.
