Where in the World?

Glance at these two pictures and see if you can figure out where they are. You will notice the American flag, so at least you know which country.

This is what Christmas Day looked like this year for thousands of homeless people in dark and dingy Skid Row - the underbelly of Downtown Los Angeles

The video shows rubbish bags piled up by the pavements and littered across streets, and tents erected in clusters where people have camped down for the night

The Daily Mail reports that they picture beautiful downtown Los Angeles. At least, it's a sanctuary city in a sanctuary state.

Rubbish bags piled up by the pavements and littered across streets.

Tents erected in clusters where people have camped down for the night.

Dozens of directionless residents congregating by the roadside and wandering into the road.

This is what Christmas Day looked like for thousands of homeless people in the dark and dingy underbelly of Downtown Los Angeles this year.

I can certainly believe it.

Could have been Seattle, but for the palm trees

Could have been Miami, with the palm trees.

Clearly could not have been the Big Craphole. It is WAY too clean for that sewer.

Haven’t these people heard about net neutrality, tax cuts, Paris climate accords and this year,s flu strain?

I don't suppose its possible most of these homeless people are not all illegal immigrants?

The homeless are certainly not that conspicuous in Minneapolis, and I imagine most prefer the rule-bound shelters in the winter.

I recall Robert Neuwirth on TED talking about slum cities around the world and seeing them as the "cities of tomorrow" and it makes sense that there's more opportunities available living in a large city, however ugly to the modern eye. He predicts there will be 2 billion squatters by 2030. They've got to live somewhere.

I guess in centuries past the cities were where wealthy people lived, and the slums were around the edges of the city. But with modern roads and cars, the sterile suburbs/exurbs are the place where the rich live, and they can drive to everything they need, so they don't have to care about any one place, except to make sure there's no poor people near their urban castle.

It all outside my comfort zone, including the sterile exurbs, but its the world we have, and in some ways I might admire those who figure out a way to live without becoming debt slaves. It's a worthy if difficult goal.

Ares Olympus....WTF did you just write?!?!!!? Can't make heads nor tails if you are for or against the city slums as pictured!??!?!?
Oh wait you are from Minneapolis; AH yes, you are one of those that have been seduced into thinking that immigrants, legal or illegal, should be allowed to follow their homelands customs. You probably don't even think squatters should attempt to rise to the level of the middle class strata.
Living in squatter settlements in a third world country is not a natural state of thinking for people. But, it is a natural way of life in those countries due to their usual socialistic/communistic governments. In that style of government, the hoi polloi never expects to rise above poverty. In that style of government, the government sucks up all the wealth. Living in a squatters settlement is a human travesty that can be easily rectified. If the immigrant can make it to the USA; the country that gives people the opportunity to rise above where ever they are at economically.

There's a simple solution.

Just raise the minimum wage!

People camp in the streets because they are allowed to. Anyone sleeping in front of Maxine Waters house. How about Mark Zukerberg's. It is a law enforcement problem.
