One is tempted to say that the era of smart diplomacy is over. World leaders have taken the measure of Barack Obama and have chosen not to take him very seriously. The premier of China snubbed him in Copenhagen.
When your banker treats you as a person of little consequence, it is time to worry.
Perhaps the world's people still love Barack Obama more than they loved his predecessor. But unless you live in a Sally-Field world, where your life goal is to have people like you, you should be distressed to see the embarrassing performance of the man who represents us all on the world stage.
