Yesterday, we
remarked that most American high school graduates were not prepared for college. Happily or unhappily for them colleges do not care. I called it
educational malpractice, because that is what it is.
Today, I report, from the Daily Wire, the results from the
same survey, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, this time
regarding eighth graders in America's public elementary and middle schools. The news is not very good. In fact, it is appallingly
bad:
A new
report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress revealed that
approximately two-thirds of eighth graders in American public schools were not
proficient in reading and math last year.
The
report, released by the U.S. Department of Education, revealed that 65% of
eighth graders in public schools were not proficient in reading and 67% were
not proficient in math. The report also revealed that the results were
significantly worse in urban districts.
In America’s inner cities, the situation us worse:
Only 5
percent of Detroit public-school eighth graders were proficient or better in
math. Only 7 percent were proficient or better in reading.
In the
Cleveland public schools, only 11 percent of eight graders were proficient or
better in math and only 10 percent were proficient or better in reading.
In the
Baltimore public schools, only 11 percent were proficient or better in math and
only 13 percent were proficient or better in reading.
I would mention, for your edification, that these children
attended school during the Obama presidency. How did the boost in self-esteem
these children gained by seeing the first black president translate into
academic performance?
It didn’t.

Stuart: Yesterday, we remarked that most American high school graduates were not prepared for *high school*.
Should that say "...not prepared for *college*"?

It also coincided with the rise of the smart phone and social media, although bad numbers in isolation don't necessarily tell you much.
Correction made. Thank you.
It would appear that leftist teachers are deliberately dumbing down our schools (and colleges), but more so (WAAAAAAAY more so) in urban schools. (Is "inner city schools"
inappropriate usage?)
